How to Celebrate National Make a Dog’s Day

This year marks the fifth anniversary of National Make a Dog’s Day. Subaru started this holiday in 2019 as a way to help specials needs pups get adopted from the shelter. Often times, these sweet tripods and one-eyed snugglebears get overlooked. So, October 22nd is a day to raise awareness for all rescue pets, especially those who have disabilities.

Make a Dog’s Day celebrates all kinds of puppers with a primary spotlight on “Underdogs”. These are senior, physically challenged, or otherwise unique doggos who often wait the longest to be adopted.

Meet the five Underdogs chosen for 2023.

Rescue dogs make the best pets because they know you saved their lives!

This adorable, old girl is a cuddlebug who lost one of her eyes when she was just a baby. Her mom adopted her, and she’s been living her best life ever since. Just look at that smile!

I’m lucky to meet a lot of these cuties when I housesit and walk with Rover. As a dog mom of a pittie/Boxer mix who made it to 13, and a weenie dog who lived to be 19, seniors hold a special place in my heart.

So, how can you make a dog’s day?

  1. Adopt from your local shelter or rescue group.

  2. Foster a homeless animal.

  3. Many facilities offer “doggie dates” where you can take a pooch to the park or on a pet-friendly outing so they can get some much-needed fresh air and freedom from their kennels for a few hours.

  4. Shop Subaru’s pet-friendly auto accessories, and they’ll donate $20 to ASPCA for each purchase.

  5. Spend some extra time cuddling, walking, or playing fetch with your four-legged family member.

As an added incentive to help these homeless hounds find fur-ever houses, Subaru will donate $100 for every animal adopted throughout the month of October. Full details and participating locations are listed here.

For new Rover users, use promo code SYBILS98720 to get $20 off your first service anywhere in the U.S.
